Kenyatta Williams, designer of Kae Couture, is an up and coming student designer who is well on her way to success in the fashion industry.
The 20-year old, fashion design major at Clark Atlanta University has been a professional designer for nearly three years and has featured her clothing in approximately 15 runway shows since her freshman year at the university.
Kae Couture primarily features designer swimwear, but will soon launch formal dresses and men and women casual wear. “I mainly focused on swimwear because whenever I went to shop for a swimsuit I would only find a tiny bikini, that was mass produced and everyone could buy it or I found a one-piece that didn’t flatter your body type,” Williams said. “So I bought fabric, went home and started designing swimsuits that were fashionable, form-fitting and sexy,” she added.
Williams admits that although her swimwear are her own designs, many of which she dreamed of in the middle of the night and woke up the next day and created, her inspiration comes from other designers such as Gottex.
Gottex designs high-end fashion couture swimwear and is based out of Miami. However, Williams plans on selling her swimsuits at a fraction of the price of a Gottex swimsuit.
Kae Couture is a new line yet has received a lot of attention. As mentioned before, the line has been featured in over 15 fashion shows, has been used in photo shoots by famous photographers, many from overseas and was once featured in Bahamas Next Top Model. Williams described how excited she was when her swimwear was featured on the reality television show. BNTM chose her as a designer feature for the television show and she was asked to be a special panel judge during the elimination. But the young designer was not far from home; her father is from the island of Nassau.
Next on the calendar, literally, is the Kae Couture 12-month calendar. Each month will feature a different piece of swimwear catering to that month. In February 2008, Williams will be hosting a launch party for her formal dresses and casual wear at Verve nightclub in downtown Atlanta.
William’s future plans include becoming a renowned fashion designer, nationwide and internationally, “I would love to have a fashion house in Milan,” she said. “I plan on studying abroad next semester so I can introduce Kae Couture to other countries.”
Williams ships in her fabric from Los Angeles and New York to ensure that her designs are original, but she does frequent a particular fabric shop here in Atlanta. To order a Kae Coture dress or bathing suit you can contact Williams via email, or through her website, http://kaecouture.weebly.com and from there she will contact you to set-up a consultation meeting, it takes her approximately one week to create and perfect the garment and she will follow-up with the last fitting before you can actually own a piece of her line.
